In a baseball game, the players use a special type of shoes which is known as baseball cleat shoe. These shoes are different from running shoes or shoes that are used in other forms of sport. They have protrusions on the sole to enable a firm grip on the field while running or sliding. These protrusions can be either conical in shape or they may also have blade-like shapes. The baseball cleat shoe is usually made of materials like rubber, plastic or even metal. The material of the stud is dependent on the type of surface and the playing environment.

Cleat Shoes In Baseball
Cleats came into fashion in the United States during 1860 when baseball shoes first started using metal spikes. The Dickson Baseball Dictionary describes the baseball cleat shoe as a special shoe type for a baseball professional that has cleats for traction and laces for support. The first official invention of the baseball cleat shoe was in 1882 by Waldo M Claflin. With the arrival of American Football in the United States in the early 20th century, the use of cleats also became prominent. These football shoes were, in fact, baseball shoes. In course of time innovations began to happen and in 1920 the first detachable cleats were seen in the market. As baseball grew, cleats also began to adapt themselves to adjust to the changing playing surfaces. In 1970, the baseball cleat shoe was using rubber cleats to adapt to the artificial turfs.
Technical Specification Of Baseball Shoe
For baseball, these cleats come in rectangular shapes made of either rubber, plastic or metal. Rubber cleats have small protrusions in the middle and have prominent grooves. It has soft rubber spikes around the edges and heels. Plastic cleats have thick hard plastic spikes and the bottom is quite hard. They have no grooves at all and unlike in rubber cleats, the spikes in plastic cleats are on the outsole. Metal spikes have thin metal spikes instead of hard plastic spikes and they are quite similar to the plastic spikes. Youth baseball uses rubber and plastic cleats while Professional baseball cleat shoe uses metal spikes. Plastic cleats are now becoming popular in the MLB games as it is lighter in weight and has an improved weight distribution.
