World Series is the annual championship event of MLB that concludes the MLB Postseason. This championship is a contest between the champions from both the leagues and has the best-of-seven playoff structure. Modern-day World Series which is more often referred to as ‘Fall Classic’ first started in 1903 and has been an annual event with an exception for two years. In 1904, the National League champion New York Giants refused to play against the American League Champion Boston Americans and in 1994 the World Series was canceled as a result of the players strike.

Few Exceptions Of The Event

  • The World Series has always been a best-of-seven format only with an exception in 1903, 1919, 1920, and 1921 when the winner was decided by a best-of-nine playoff.
  • Majority of the Series games have been played in the month of October barring a few when the event was scheduled in the month of September and November.
  • Commissioner’s Trophy is given to the winner of the series winner.
  • To memorialize the victory, the players and the coaches usually receive a World Series ring but in a few exceptions, they have also received Medallions and Pocket Watches.

  • In a tradition, The President of the United States invites the winning team to the White House.
  • A total of 114 series have been held until now.
  • National League team has won a total of 48 games while the American League teams have won a total of 66 games until now.
  • New York Yankees have featured in 40 Series until 2018 out of which they have been victorious in 27 of them. This is the most number of victories for any MLB Franchisee.
  • On the contrary, Los Angeles Dodgers of the National League have recorded the most number of Series losses; i.e. 14.
  • The St. Louis Cardinals of the National League have featured in 19 World Series season, winning 11 of them. This is second highest amongst all the teams and the most among the National League clubs.
  • Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers have featured in quite a few Series with 20 each individually.

Facts About The Franchisee’s

  • The Seattle Mariners and the Washington Nationals are the only two MLB franchisees who have never appeared in a World Series.
  • San Diego Padres, Colorado Rockies, Texas Rangers, Tampa Bay Rays, and Milwaukee Brewers are the only Franchisees who have played in the World Series seasons but have never registered a win.
  • The only franchisee from outside of the United States of America to have featured in the World Series is the Toronto Blue Jays who have won the series in 1992 and 1993.
  • The Houston Astros is the only franchisee to have appeared for both the National League in 2005 and the American League in 2017. They were the winners of the 2017 series.
  • Boston Red Sox are the current winning franchisee of the World Series.
